Designers are shared resources that can be booked internally by different Scrum teams when they need graphic or UI/UX design work.

Getting a Designer into your project

If you need a designer:

  1. Identify the type of designer you need
(See the difference between graphic and UI/UX design)
  2. Talk to the Product Owner and make sure they agree you need a designer
  3. Find and call a Design Master to discuss your requirements and identify the designer who is most suitable to work on the project
  4. Call in the designer to estimate the work (ideally with the PO in the call)

The Design Master is often a Bench Master, staying aligned with all internal projects. They are responsible for understanding product roadmaps and knowing how products are prioritized.

The Design Master should regularly review designer bookings (both client and internal) to allocate resources efficiently.

Booking a Designer

Once everyone is in agreement, the Design Master should process the Designer booking:

  1. Look at the Designer bookings - see Booked In Days - Designers
  2. Look at the Internal Projects to identify priorities
  3. Create an Outlook appointment using Outlook Calendar | New Meeting | Content Chooser | All Staff Email Templates | Select booking-a-designer and set regarding ssw.pencilledin (Note: Make sure status is set as "Free", and ensure the "Teams meeting" toggle is set in the "off" position).

This idea came out of a brainstorming session in Sydney, making it easier for Scrum teams to quickly and efficiently book designers. For more insights, check out the UR MAMA in Scrum presentation.
